The Best Places for Wedding Photos in Athens
Short answer: the coast south of the city in the hour before sunset — Cape Sounion, Lake Vouliagmeni, the Riviera venues at Varkiza, Vouliagmeni and Anavyssos — and, in the city itself, the rooftops and old streets under the Acropolis at dusk.
Couples ask me this before almost anything else, usually while they are still choosing between Athens and an island. Here is my honest list — not the most famous spots, the ones where the photographs actually work. Athens is my city. Most of the places below are venues I have worked at; a few at the end are the ones couples keep asking me about, and they are worth knowing. What they all have in common is the light in the last hour before sunset.
The coast: the Athens Riviera
The stretch of coast running south from the city — Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, Varkiza, Lagonissi, Anavyssos, Sounion. Most of the destination weddings I photograph in Athens happen along it. For photographs the rule is simple: plan the ceremony for the hour before sunset and keep twenty minutes after it for the two of you.
Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon
The southernmost point of Attica, the temple on the cliff, the sea on three sides. Couples marry at venues nearby — Grecotel Cape Sounio, Eagles Palace — and use the temple itself for portraits at sunset. The drive from central Athens is about an hour. Worth it — nothing else near the city gives you this horizon.
Lake Vouliagmeni
A thermal lake set inside a rock cliff, ten minutes from the coast. The light bouncing off the water at sunset is unusual — nothing else in Athens looks like it. I photographed a wedding here that ended up being one of my favourites of the year.
Island — Art & Taste and the Island venues (Varkiza)
Open-air, right on the water, the name that appears in every list of Athens Riviera wedding venues. The sunset light here in July and August is the reason couples book it. Island Art & Taste is the smaller sister venue — more intimate, cleaner architecture, photographs that read more editorial; better for weddings under 120 guests. We plan the ceremony for the hour before sunset and the portraits for the twenty minutes after.
Ktima 48 (Anavyssos)
A minimalist estate above the sea with its own chapel, on the quieter end of the Riviera. Modern architecture, the sea behind the ceremony, garden and pool for the evening. The coast turns west here, so the last light lands on the ceremony instead of behind it.
Astir Beach and the Four Seasons Astir Palace (Vouliagmeni)
The pine forest, the private beach, the cliff path down to the water. Multiple ceremony spots inside one property. The hotel is luxury, the wedding photographs feel quieter than the venue suggests.
Lagonissi and Anavyssos
Grand Resort Lagonissi, Cape Krio, smaller private estates along this stretch. Less famous than Vouliagmeni, often calmer, often better light because the coast turns west.
Divani Apollon Palace (Kavouri)
Beachfront, large reception spaces, easy logistics for big guest counts. Less stylised than the Island venues — works best when the couple and the décor carry the look.
The estates: gardens outside the city
Ktima venues in the northern suburbs and toward Marathon. Garden weddings, usually larger, usually with the reception going late. The light inside an estate is different every hour, and the best portraits usually happen in the garden just after the ceremony, before dinner.
Pyrgos Melissourgou
A stone tower estate with Mediterranean gardens — the historic option, and the one I have photographed most. Ceremony among the flowers, reception under the trees, portraits along the old walls as the light goes.
Iliou Petra
A garden estate in Attica — the kind of wedding where the ceremony, dinner and dancing all happen outdoors, in one long evening. See the Iliou Petra wedding in the portfolio.
Ktima Laas and Ktima Orizontes
Two more of the classic Attica estates: Laas with its stone architecture and vineyards, Orizontes with olive trees, a pool and a chapel. Both photograph best in the hour before dinner, when the garden lights come on and the sky is still blue.
The city: under the Acropolis

Rooftops in Plaka, Monastiraki and Thission look directly at the Acropolis — Dias, A for Athens, 360 Cocktail Bar, private rooftops rented for the day. The Acropolis changes colour twice during the evening: once when the sun goes, once when the floodlights come on. Both are worth being there for.
Plaka, Anafiotika, Monastiraki, Thission
The old neighbourhoods: narrow streets that go quiet in the early evening, small Byzantine chapels, the whitewashed lanes of Anafiotika just under the rock. This is also where I take most of my Athens pre-wedding sessions — the Plaka, the old streets, the Acropolis hill at sunset.
Churches
Orthodox ceremonies at the big Athens churches — Agia Eirini in the Plaka, Agios Dionysios, Agia Sophia — and the small chapels scattered through the old neighbourhoods. The narrow street outside the church often gives a better photograph than the garden.
Worth knowing: the venues couples ask me about
These come up in almost every conversation about a Riviera or countryside wedding. I have not photographed a wedding at every one of them yet — I know the areas and the light, and I would happily work at any of them.
Ble Azure and Ble Pavillon (Alimos) — beachfront, olive trees, built for big weddings. Reef Athens Riviera — a modern, boho beach setting. The Margi Farm (Vouliagmeni) — a farm inside the Margi hotel brand, rustic, farm-to-table, 100–200 guests. Varkiza Resort and Moorings (Vouliagmeni marina) — seaside and nautical. Hatzi Mansion — a neo-Byzantine mansion with vineyards and a view over the Saronic Gulf. Pyrgos Petreza — vineyards and a serious kitchen. Alsos Nimfon — a private estate near Lake Marathon with its own chapel. Sinterina Estate — gardens and an on-site church. Golf Privé (Glyfada) — pine forest, very large capacity. Muse Urban (Monastiraki) — the one city venue with the Acropolis in the window.
One rule for all of them
The place matters less than the hour. In Athens from June to September the hour before sunset is an actual hour — warm without being orange, soft without being flat. Whichever place you choose, we build the timeline backwards from that hour: the ceremony, the first minutes outside, the portraits. That is the first thing I work out with every couple.
